Why did Ricardo Gareca fail with the Chilean national team?

July 9, 2025

Ricardo Gareca’s tenure as Chile’s head coach, which lasted between January 2024 and June 2025, ended abruptly with his resignation after losing 2‑0 to Bolivia in La Paz. At your favorite place for sport betting 1xBet it will also be possible to wager on South American football matches too.

Chile finished bottom of the South American qualifying table, amassing just 10 points in 13 official matches, with only 1 victory, thus sealing their third straight absence from a World Cup. If you like the FIFA World Cup, then the 1xBet sport betting platform is a place you may definitely want to explore.

Discussing a few factors

In 1st place, we should say that Gareca stubbornly adhered to his familiar 4‑2‑3‑1 formation, rarely adjusting tactics. Critics noted his inflexibility: he refused to switch systems mid-match, even in dire circumstances. Besides wagering on football, punters can also try to make their 1xBet virtual sport betting too.

Also, a core issue was a stagnant attack: only 6 goals scored versus 17 conceded in qualifying, which resulted in a net –11 goal difference. During the Copa América 2024, Chile failed to score a single goal in the group stage.

Furthermore, Gareca showed a puzzling loyalty to underperforming veterans like:

Arturo Vidal;
Esteban Pavez;
and Diego Valdés.

Remember that at 1xBet you can wager on Chilean footballers and also make virtual sport betting too. He also neglected talented players in form like Felipe Loyola and Lucas Cepeda. He also consistently omitted Ben Brereton Diaz, the only striker playing in the Premier League, and substituted him after just 35 minutes in a qualifier.

Failure to adapt

Gareca seldom attended matches in the Chilean league or youth tournaments, impairing his familiarity with emerging domestic talents. He also failed to conduct micro‑camps for players based in Chile. If you visit the football online betting 1xBet platform, you will also see there are wagers on Chilean footballers too.

Also, journalists and staff criticized his preparation and analysis of opponents. Support staff pointed to his limited involvement with local media and clubs, conducting key meetings and planning from Argentina. Speaking about Argentina, there is online football betting at 1xBet on matches from this part of the world too.

Ultimately, the weight of poor results, combined with tactical stubbornness and selection controversies, sealed his fate. Moving forward, Chile faces the challenge of reconstructing a coherent football identity, balancing generational renewal with tactical adaptability. But Gareca’s era will be remembered for its missed opportunities and inability to revive La Roja.
